Local gamers compete for charity

LIMA — Lima area residents of all ages had the chance to get their “game” on Saturday at Barry Electronics.

More than 80 area game fanatics turned out for the 13th Annual Charity Video Game Tournament.

“We get a pretty good turnout every year,” said co-owner Brian Barry. “It is a popular event and we have many people who have been coming for most of those 13 years.”

The tournament allows players to participate against each other for prizes and trophies. Gamers participated against each other in Mario Kart, Super Smash Borthers and Street Fighter II. Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin spoke briefly before the event and presented a proclamation from Mayor Dave Berger to kick off the event.

The event, which has raised more than $10,000 since its first event for local groups, is benefiting the LPD’s Summer Student Program.

“It is a free class and the money will be used to cover the costs of things we need for the program,” said LPD patrolman Scott Luedeke. “It gives students an experience if they are thinking about going into law enforcement.”

Seth Barga, 16, of Fort Loramie, was participating for the fourth year in the event. He won the Mario Kart competition in 2014 and placed second last year. He was looking to get back in the top spot by participating in Super Smash Brothers this year.

“I am a gamer and it gives me a chance to talk to other gamers,” Barga said. “There is great people to talk to.”

Barga said sometimes you can even learn game tips from other gamers.

Other prizes for the winners included video games, audio equipment, collectibles and gift cards, all provided by area businesses and sponsors.

Jacson Sommer, 12, and Eric Kemper, 12, both of St. Henry, compete Saturday in the 13th Annual Charity Video Game contest at Barry Electronics in Lima.
