Lima Rotary Club helps fight against polio

LIMA — A new polio vaccine began being used all over the world in the last few weeks, and the Lima Rotary Club has been part of the change.

Between April 17 and May 1, 155 countries and territories switched from using the trivalent oral polio vaccine, which protects against all three strains of poliovirus, to bivalent OPV, which protects against the two remaining strains of wild polio (types 1 and 3).

In February 1985, Rotary International created the Polio Plus program and made a commitment to help eradicate polio worldwide. The Lima Rotary Club has regular fundraisers for Polio Plus and in 2015, District 6600, which encompasses 63 Rotary Clubs in northwest Ohio, raised more than $63,000. This was enough to vaccinate 2.5 million children worldwide.

“This is an amazing accomplishment,” says Lima Rotary Club President David Runk. “We are proud to be able to contribute to such a vital effort.”
