Teen’s body found at Shawnee soccer field

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — A Shawnee High School student was found dead at the Shawnee soccer field over the weekend in what officials said was a suicide.

Jon Andrews, a senior, served as a captain on Shawnee’s soccer team. The team met Monday morning with the coaching staff and practiced after school.

“We are focusing on circling the wagons to help the players cope with this tragedy,” said Ryan Quatman, head coach of the Shawnee soccer team. “I’m just so proud of the players for supporting one another and sticking together.”

The team planned to meet again Monday night with their parents to talk through the events and the season. The team still plans to play its game Tuesday against Ottawa-Glandorf.

“It’s what Jon would have wanted, he would have wanted for the team to keep pushing forward,” Quatman said. “There is no replacing Jon. We will never be able to replace a player like him.”

School counselors and counselors from a crisis response team were made available to the students and teammates Monday to help cope with the loss of their friend.

Shawnee Police Department officials said Monday afternoon the department was continuing to investigate the incident and declined to offer any additional information.
