Wapakoneta family to host benefit for daughter

WAPAKONETA — It’s common among women and is often easily treatable, but for 22-year-old Myranda Nash, endometriosis is a disease that could one day take her life.

“I’m terrified I’m going to die,” Nash said, “but I’m going to do everything I can for that not to happen.”

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. In Nash’s case, the tissue is connected to her colon. She said if her colon is perforated, she could go into septic shock and possibly die.

Along with the everyday worry of going into septic shock, she also suffers from abdominal pain, shortness of breath and nausea. Nash’s mother, Christina, said perhaps the most troubling symptoms are dizziness and fainting. Christina Nash said just in the last month, her daughter has been taken to the emergency room twice for injuries she suffered after falling.

“She can’t be left alone at this point because the dizzy spells are so bad that if I leave, I’m worried she’s going to pass out while I’m gone and end up falling,” Christina Nash said.

Christina Nash said she does her best to take care of Myranda Nash and her other two daughters, but as a single mother without a job, providing for her family has proven increasingly difficult. Christina Nash also has endometriosis, as well as fibromyalgia, and had been working at the Wapakoneta Walmart before she became seriously ill. After her 27th surgery, Christina Nash has still not been cleared by her doctor to return to work, and may never be able to again. Myranda Nash also had to quit her job at McDonald’s because of her condition, leaving the Nash family without a steady income for the last few months.

With the bills piling up, and the need for Myranda Nash to receive the medical treatment she needs, Christina Nash decided to hold a benefit for her daughter. It will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Wapakoneta Eagles, 25 E. Auglaize St.

The benefit will feature an auction, a 50-50 drawing, raffles and door prizes. Dinner will also be available for purchase, and monetary donations will be accepted throughout the event. The benefit is a “Wizard of Oz” theme.

Proceeds from the benefit will go toward Myranda Nash’s medical bills, which includes a $2,000 chemotherapy shot she is given six times a year. The money will also be used for doctor’s visits in Columbus and Cleveland.

“One is a gynecology specialist and the other is an infertility doctor, so we’re reaching out to two different areas and I’m praying these doctors can come together and find a solution,” Christina Nash said. “I just want what’s best for her health and her life.”

Christina Nash said there’s been less laughter and more tears at the Nash home lately, but through it all she and her daughters try to maintain a positive attitude.

“At the end of all of this, I’m hoping it’s going to be the biggest triumph we’ve ever had to overcome,” Christina Nash said.
