Children enjoy youth day at fair

LIMA — It was a great day to be a kid Monday at the Allen County Fair.

Designated as youth day, the fair offered plenty for children to do. Tickets were $2 off at the gate and children could purchase a wristband to ride the rides for one low price from noon to 5 p.m.

Plenty of children took advantage of the offer to hit every ride on the grounds at least once.

Four-year-old Jayden Clavell was just one of the many children, and he said he rode every ride more than once. Clavell seemed to go airborne in his trip down the slide because of his small stature, but he showed his thrill-seeking side for more.

“I am going to ride the Zipliner,” Clavell said has he pulled his parents along.

Danessa Criollo said she works at the prison and was fortunate to get the day off for children’s day. She said they had been at the fairgrounds enjoying the rides from noon until 5 p.m.

“They were on all of the rides it seemed like a million times,” she said. “They had a lot of fun.

The youth day started with a fishing derby at 9 a.m. at Roschman Pond. Other activities included the Jungle Island Zoo, a magician, and a slew of youth day activities in the picnic tent. Magician John Measner and the Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean had several performances throughout the day.

“It was a very nice day and the weather stayed a little bit cooler for the children,”said fair manager David Grimm. “If a kid was here for five hours and got on four or five rides an hour, that’s about 50 cents a ride.

The Wild World of Animals show was popular and kids got the chance to see many animals, including snakes, tortoises and alligators just to name a few. The show out of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, has been named one of the top entertainment shows in the nation. For children wanting to check out the farm animals, 4-H members had several shows going on in the animal barns.

The day ended with the NTPA tractor and truck pull in the grandstand and Triumphant in the gospel tent.

“It looks like we are going to have great weather through the end of the fair,” Grimm said.

The fair continues Tuesday with highlights including harness racing in the grandstand at 7 p.m. There will be $2 off admission with the donation of a canned food.
