New Bremen teen killed in camper fire

ST. MARYS — A New Bremen man died in a camper fire Sunday, and authorities were investigating the circumstances.

Bernard P. Homan, 19, was found dead inside a camper in a field off Southland Road east of county Road 66A, the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The St. Marys Township Fire Department and St. Marys Rescue Squad were called to the location at 1:12 a.m. Sunday to handle a camper fire. The caller reported people still were inside the camper, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

Sheriff’s deputies also responded. Firefighters found Homan inside the camper, which the fire destroyed, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

There was a gathering of five young adults at the location of the fire. Homan was sleeping in the camper. Somehow a fire started that killed Homan and destroyed the camper, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The location of the deadly fire only has a shed on the property and the camper that was destroyed by fire, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The Auglaize County coroner and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office were called in to assist in the investigation. The investigation continued Monday.
