Schoonover Observatory won’t open for eclipse

LIMA — The Lima Astronomical Society encourages you to enjoy the upcoming April 8 total solar eclipse. You just won’t be able to do it at Lima’s Schoonover Observatory.

“Due to ongoing renovations, staffing limitations and potential safety concerns, Schoonover Observatory will not be open on April 8,” the organization announced in a press release.

The observatory has been undergoing renovations since the City of Lima received a $250,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to improve the building, dome and telescope.

In August 2022, the observatory acknowledged it had a 14-inch Celestron telescope, guide scopes, accessories and eyepieces stolen from the observatory.

The Lima Astronomical Society did acknowledge “it’s just a temporary pause.”

“We’ll be back under the stars soon, ready to explore the universe with you again,” the organization said.

The organization will sell commemorative solar eclipse glasses at Saturday’s upcoming Solar Smash Bash at Greater Lima Region Park & Amphitheater.
