Roses and Thorns

The roses are in full bloom this week.

Rose: To Shawn and Diamond Russell, who are behind the transformation of the Booker Building at the corner of Spring and Union streets. It’s wonderful to see community residents investing in our city.

Rose: To Dr. Christine Gaynier, who donated her own kidney to 17-year-old Will Stolls. “I really thought the odds were slim that I would be a suitable donor for Will, but wanted to try and help if I could,” Gaynier said.

Rose: To Destiny Caldwell, who became Allen County’s prosecutor Thursday evening. Caldwell became the first woman to hold the position. We wish her well and hope she provides even-handed justice in the county. She replaces Juergen Waldick, who voters elected as a judge on the Third District Court of Appeals.

Rose: To Hofeller, Hiatt and Clark co-owners Phil Osmon and Jim Gaugh, who are retiring and closing down the 125-year-old downtown retailer. While we’re sad to see a historic business close, we know the co-owners put a lot of time and effort into keeping the top-notch retailer open over the years.

Thorn: To Deron A. Perkins, who attempted to abduct a 4-year-old child and tightly held the child while sitting on a sidewalk. This is every parent’s nightmare, and we’re glad no one was hurt physically, although it’s bound to have an emotional toll.
