Roses and Thorns

There will be plenty of time for thorns in 2023. Let’s start the new year off with some roses.

Rose: To Andraya Carter, a sideline reporter during the Duke’s Mayo Bowl broadcast Friday of Maryland and North Carolina State, who offered a shout-out to her family in Lima. The former Tennessee basketball player and rising TV commentator is the daughter of Bath graduate Tyke Lhamon.

Rose: To a pair of Lima men who refereed during the Sugar Bowl on Saturday. Tom Riepenhoff was the center judge, and Dennis Morris was the back judge in the Alabama-Kansas game in New Orleans.

Rose: To Karen Chambers, of Lima, whose idea was used in the nationally syndicated Pluggers comic Thursday. The caption read, “A plugger hopes, if he waits long enough, his leisure suit will come back into style.”

Rose: For Shawnee Township Fire Department firefighter and paramedic Matt Myers. The community showed its support for his recovery from Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome, raising more than $31,000 through GoFundMe.com. The goal was just $20,000 to help with food, lodging, gas and medical bills.
