LIMA — Residents gathered Sunday to recall the last steam locomotive built in Lima back in May 1949.

An open house was held Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Park to mark the occasion.

The 220-ton Nickel Plate Road 779 rolled out of the Lima Locomotive Works in May 1949, ending 80 yards of producing more than 7,500 steam locomotives shipped around the world.

It also marked an opportunity to show off the repainting of 1883 Official Car 5 at the railroad exhibit at Lincoln Park. Crews discovered an old pinstriped pattern that had likely been covered up by paint since the 1930s.
