Roses and Thorns

The roses are sweet, but the thorns are quite prickly this week.

Rose: To the family and friends of Bath teacher Amanda Markley, who helped bring a vision of Rockefeller Center to her backyard as she battles aggressive cancer. It’s heartwarming to see people come together with a thoughtful gesture like this.

Rose: To PSD Stars by Erin, in Delphos. For the last few years, the dancers there have worked to deliver a nicer holiday season to a family in need. This year, they’re donating to a family that had a home destroyed by fire. These lessons are even better than the ones children learn about ballet, pointe and kicklines. Lessons of generosity live on forever.

Rose: To Jerry Hoersten, of Delphos, whose idea appears in the nationally syndicated comic Pluggers. The caption reads, “You’re a plugger if you dress for comfort rather than fashion.”

Thorn: To former Wapakoneta utility clerk Christine Ann Steinke, who faces charges of allegedly taking more than $150,000 from the city’s utilities customers for her own use. People handling taxpayers’ money must be held to a higher standard.

Thorn: To Tarockis Greer, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison for robbing and assaulting two people in 2021. We applaud the judge for such a long punishment, as violence within one’s home can’t be tolerated.
