City of Lima announces bridge project

LIMA — The City of Lima has announced a new project. Beginning in the Spring of 2024, the city will rehabilitate the West Street Bridge over the Ottawa River. The city also plans to rebuild the southern intersection with Eureka Street and South Shore Drive.

The project is expected to be finished by fall 2024. Construction will cost around $1,800,000 to complete.

On the bridge, construction workers will remove and replace the current bridge deck and beams. In addition, they plan to patch portions of the remaining structure.

On Eureka Street and South Shore Drive, construction will consist of storm sewer improvements. The project will also consist of a new curb line, new curb ramps and resurfacing of pavement.

When construction begins, the roadways will be temporarily closed. Vehicles will be temporarily detoured.

The project will impact not only vehicular traffic but pedestrian traffic too, as a part of the construction will also take place along the Rotary Riverwalk and Ottawa River Bikeway. The public recreational property is maintained and protected by the City of Lima.

“The use of federal funds requires measures to be developed to minimize harm and advance public notice be given of impacts to this recreational property,” said City Engineer Ian Kohli in a recent press release. “Construction activities will result in temporary closures to the Rotary Riverwalk/Ottawa River Bikeway. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be detoured temporarily.”

Kohli also said construction will occur on a regulated floodplain. The impact will most likely be minor and not increase flood levels.
