Lima PODS now require permit

LIMA — The portable on-demand storage units also known as PODS are now under a new ordinance following Monday evening’s council meeting. The City of Lima now requires a permit for the use of PODS.

Residential PODS are used for storing furniture, supplies for renovations or personal items while renovating a home. Community members are able to obtain a permit from the City of Lima’s building department. The permit cost $60 and lasts for 30 days. Residents can only have two PODS on their property at a time.

Various companies provide PODS for community members to use on commercial and residential properties. The ordinance approved applies to residential properties. On Sept. 12, Kyle Benroth from MaxxBox Portables requested City Council place the ordinance on hold after the second reading before officially passing. The City of Lima agreed to place the ordinance on hold after first discussing it with the company owners.

“When we first considered the ordinance,” said Council President, John Nixon. “There were questions that came from one of the businesses that rents and distributes one of the portable storage units. They asked for a conversation with the administration and law director. The conversation led to the new ordinance. I just want to thank them for working with one of the businesses involved.”

At the previous City Council meeting, the ordinance was placed on a second reading before the Councilors voted to prohibit the use of tobacco in parks. The City of Lima partnered with Activate Allen County to address second-hand smoke in the City.

The Public Works Committee was set to discuss this ordinance but members had to reschedule. Seventh Ward Council Member Jon Neeper weighed in.

“We have calls concerning the smoker legislation,” said Neeper. “We did not forget. We had sickness on the committee so we pushed all of that back. We are not delaying the legislation. It is still on the radar and we will have a third reading in two weeks.”

Toward the end of the meeting, 2nd Ward Council Member Anthony Wilkerson encouraged community members to be neighborly.

“The leaves are falling,” said Wilkerson. “When you see them stacking up next door don’t assume they are being lazy. They might have something that is prohibiting them from doing it. Be a good neighbor and help out.”
