Roses and Thorns

There’s room for roses and thorns alike in our garden this week.

Thorn: To Jonathan Joseph Copeland, 28, of Shawnee Township, who has been charged by federal officials with helping ram a “Trump” sign into a barricade and entering the Capitol Building during the Jan. 6 raid. We expect residents from this area to respect the rule of law and not get caught up in a frenzied crowd.

Rose: To Margie Murphy Miller, who retires as Allen County Common Pleas Clerk of Courts. It’s a thankless job, but our staff enjoyed working with you and appreciated the technological advances and professionalism on your watch.

Rose: To Teens For Christ on its decision to pause its Lima ministry as it investigates allegations of wrongdoing. It’s wise to make sure no one’s being hurt while you get to the bottom of claims about questionable actions by staff.

Rose: To Lima officials for knocking down a “known drug house” at 625 N. Elizabeth St., Lima, after a third fire at the structure. It was a safety hazard both structurally and based on what’s happening inside, and we’re happy it’s down.

Thorn: To inflation. We all hate it, and we hate to learn it’s pushing rents upward in Lima at a rate much faster than wages are.
