Roses and Thorns

Maybe it’s the comfortable sunshine, but we can’t help but notice all the roses in full bloom this week:

Rose: To Greg W. Myers, of Elida, whose idea was used in Sunday’s nationally syndicated Pluggers cartoon. The caption reads, “A plugger routinely checks his mailbox seven days a week, ‘just in case,’ even though he knows there is no mail delivery on Sundays or holidays.”

Rose: To deceased ophthalmologist Dr. Herbert Beil, whose donation of 50 acres to the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District is a boon for anyone who enjoys bird-watching. It will become a conservation area, at the request of his family.

Rose: To Wapakoneta and its police department, for finally releasing the video of the recent arrest of a Lima police officer. This was after a persistent request by The Lima News and its attorneys. The video clarifies many of the questions people had about this incident, which proves the value of sharing body camera footage as soon as possible.

Rose: To everyone involved with the annual Allen County Fair. We know it’s a lot of work, and most of you are volunteers out there. Your community appreciates what you’re doing to highlight agriculture and give us all a place to enjoy for the week.
