Animals at Cleveland Zoo play in frozen tundra

CLEVELAND, Ohio — For many of us, this week’s snow has created a lot of work and angst. But for the animals at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, it brings a rare and exciting adventure.

If you’re lucky enough to be at the zoo at the right time of day, and the timing varies, you might get to see some animals playing in the snow left behind by the two recent winter storms, Izzy and Landon.

Most of the animals that are let out to enjoy the snow can be found in the Wilderness Trek area, including the Asian Highlands and the Wolf Lodge.

On Friday afternoon, the three Amur tiger cubs took time out to explore their snow-covered enclosure. The cubs, 13-months-old, spent most of the time walking around the snow, and occasionally laying down to enjoy the frozen tundra.

In the Wolf Lodge, four of the wolves could be seen out, although three of them appeared to be sleeping in the snow, and only one ventured out to see what the human visitors were up to.

Although grizzly bears normally hibernate, the grizzlies at the zoo do not because they are fed daily, so you can occasionally find them out digging through their goodie boxes, filled with veggies, meat and other bear snacks.

And, of course, the snow leopard was right at home in the snow as it wandered around its enclosure checking out the visitors.

The zoo, located at 3900 Wildlife Way in Cleveland, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tickets can be purchased online. Ticket prices are $16.95 for adults, $14.95 for seniors (62 and older), $12.95 for children (2-11) and younger than 2 are free.
