LCC cancels classes due to water main break

LIMA — A major water main break has caused officials at Lima Central Catholic High School to cancel classes for Monday December 11th.

The break was noticed between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday by a teacher. The school issued notices at 7:30 p.m. on Facebook and Twitter alerting that the school would be closed.

“We just don’t have water right now, which is really the main reason why we have to cancel school,” said Lima Central Catholic High School Principal Stephanie Williams.

“It’s primarily in the parking lot, but it was dark when everything happened, so a crew is coming out at 7:30 a.m., and I’ll be able give more information as far as damage and things like that. The city had to turn the main water line off because our parking lot was actually starting to cave in. We think the leak is underneath the main parking lot,” she said.

Ensuring the safety of students and the public was the main priority for Williams.

“There was a lot of water and mud. The parking lot had caved in in two spots from the pressure of the water underneath the parking lot,” she said. “My primary concern was just making sure people were safe, so we kind of roped off that area of the parking lot.”

As of Sunday night, there was no word on how this might affect the girls basketball game scheduled today, with LCC set to host Spencerville.

“I will be better able to assess after I get an evaluation from then on how long this project is going to take and what actual damage we’re looking at,” Williams said.
