OSBA hosts hair-raising event

LIMA — Ohio State Beauty Academy students are given a chance every year to go beyond their normal routines and get their creative juices flowing.

This year, they did it Halloween style.

A large crowd attended the academy’s Hair-O-Ween student competition held at the UNOH Event Center on Wednesday. Of the school’s current enrollment of 130 students, 114 participated in the competition. Each student was judged on the criteria of creativity and uniqueness, degree of difficulty, technical skill, presentation and neatness and overall look. Awards were given to the top five in the categories of beautiful, comical and frightful.

More importantly, however, students had the chance to step out of what they do on a normal day and learn different skills or practice others not used very often.

“That’s what cosmetology is about,” said Jillian Jarvis, OSBA vice president of development and operations. “Its about freedom of expression. They get to boost their creativity and think outside the box. They get to use extensions or do braids, things they don’t do every day.

The contest is held annually and a different theme is adopted each year. Jarvis said it is popular with the students and often graduates come back as models because they like participating in the event. Each student selects a model. An array of characters graced the stage including Bride of Frankenstein, a Victorian ghost. skeletons and a vampire just to name a few.

Student Josie Taylor said she prepared about a month in advance of the competition. Taylor prepared her model Madison Baxter as Annabelle. She has been attending OSBA since September.

“It is beneficial because it helps open your mind to different ideas,” Taylor said. “You get to create a look. You get to focus more on specialties like nails or braiding.”
