Area residents inducted into honor organization

WAPAKONETA — Heidelberg students were inducted into the School of Business Tau Pi Phi business honorary.

Ryan O’Neill, of Wapakoneta, a senior majoring in computer science and business administration was inducted. Taylor Windau, of Columbus Grove, a junior majoring in accounting and business administration was inducted.

Tau Pi Phi recognizes and honors business and economics students for quality academic work.

Area residents graduate from Ohio Dominican University

LIMAEmily Crow and Austin Goodridge graduated from Ohio Dominican University on Saturday.

Crow graduate with a bachelor of science degree. Goodridge graduated with a bachelor of science degree, cum laude.

Ohio Northern opens a Cosi

ADA — Ohio Northern University’s Northern on Main closed last Sunday to transform into a Cosi.

Cosi is set to open in the existing footprint in August and will feature a variety of signature salads, made-to-order sandwiches, soups, bagels, flatbread pizzas, gourmet beverages and desserts. Every Cosi restaurant has an open-flame, stone-hearth oven where the signature flatbread is made from scratch. This will be the only Cosi location in northwest Ohio.

Taco Bell will remain open during the transformation and will continue its regular hours going forward.

Rhodes State College commencement speaker

LIMA — J. Noah Brown gave the commencement address to the Rhodes State College Class of 2016 on Saturday.

Brown is a widely recognized and award-winning higher education policy and governance expert, author and educator whose experience spans nearly 35 years in the nation’s capital working in the nonprofit sector. He has served as president and chief executive officer of the Association of Community College Trustees since 2005 and has worked for the association since 1996. He serves on the faculty for the Doctorate in Community College Leadership program at Ferris State University in Michigan.

Ohio Northern University engineering competition teams finish strong

ADA — Competition teams from Ohio Northern University College of Engineering earned strong finishes at the 2016 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 2 Student Activities Conference.

ONU’s Sumo Robot team placed third.

ONU’s Brown Bag team finished third. Paul Sorensen, a senior computer engineering major from Ada, and Skye Vanatta, a junior electrical engineering major from Ada were on this team. In a Brown Bag competition, teams are given a bag of various components and are then required to complete a challenge with some or all of the components.

ONU’s Project Showcase team, made up of Sorensen and Sam Roth, a senior computer engineering major from Piqua, placed third. This competition allows students to test their creativity by combining the knowledge attained throughout their academic years with innovative ideas to improve an already existing design or project or create a whole new product.

Other students participating in the conference were Sean Ansted, a junior electrical engineering major from Lima; Aaron Schnipke, a junior electrical engineering major from Fort Jennings; and Max Razinger, a senior electrical engineering major from Columbus Grove.

Ottawa resident participates in ceremony

OTTAWA — Trine University’s Allen School of Engineering Y Technology were inducted into the Order of the Engineer during a ceremony. Among the students participating in the ring ceremony was Adam Lehman, of Ottawa, majoring in electrical engineering.

The ring ceremony is the public induction of candidates into the Order of the Engineer, a fellowship of engineers who are trained in science and technology and dedicated to the practice, teaching or administration of their profession.

During the ceremony, engineering students are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring is placed on the smallest finger of the working hand.

ONU receives Tree Campus USA recognition

ADA — Ohio Northern University has been named a Tree Campus USA by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation for the sixth time.

Tree Campus USA is a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America Inc. and honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation.

Ohio Northern met five core standards for sustainable campus forestry required by Tree Campus USA, including establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and the sponsorship of student service-learning projects.

Ashland University graduates

LIMA — Five area residents will receive degrees from Ashland University on Saturday.

Victoria Beverly, of Lima, will receive a bachelor of science in business administration degree. She is majoring in business management. Beverly is the daughter of Marvin Beverly, of Lima, and a 2012 graduate of Shawnee High School.

Alexandra Manley, of Lima, will receive a bachelor of science in education degree. She is majoring in early childhood education. Manley is the daughter of Richard and Angela Manley, of Lima, and a 2012 graduate of Bath High School.

Levi Rex, of Lima, will receive a master of business administration degree. He is majoring in executive management.

Lori Schroeder, of Columbus Grove, will receive a master of education degree. She is majoring in teaching and learning in the 21st century.

Andrew Thomas, of Van Wert, will receive a bachelor of arts degree. He is majoring in political science and history. Thomas is the son of Keith and Jill Thomas, of Van Wert, and is a 2012 graduate of Van Wert High School.

Bluffton students honored for academic excellence

BLUFFTON — Bluffton University recognized top students for their academic achievements at its annual academic awards and honors forum.

Rachel Schumm, of Findlay, was among 12 seniors honored for completing the honors program. She was also presented with the Dr. Elizabeth Hostetler Outstanding Educator Award.

Jacob Headings, of Bluffton received the Beaver-Falcon Master of Economics Scholarship. Patricia Latimer, of New Bremen, received the John Kraft Medical School Award. Kimberly Meyer, of Defiance, received the Russell A. Lantz Choral Award.

Jennifer Brown, of St. Marys, Allyson Collar, of Columbus Grove, and Elizabeth Luersman, of Fort Jennings, received the Art Show Juror’s Awards of Distinction.

Miriam Fike, of Lima, received the Boehr Award for Best of Juried Student Art Show. Rebecca Starn, of Findlay, received the Henry Smith Peace Oratorical Awards. Austin Siefker, of Lima, received the Athlete with the Highest Scholastic Record.

Wapakoneta resident inducted into Who’s Who

WAPAKONETA — Courtney Hunter, of Wapakoneta, was inducted into the 2016 class of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges at this year’s Youngstown State University Student Award Banquet.

Hunter is a student in the health and human services program.

ONU’s Raabe College of Pharmacy held commencement

ADA — Ohio Northern University celebrated the 132nd Raabe College of Pharmacy Commencement Ceremony on Sunday.

Tim Kier, a 1982 ONU pharmacy graduate, delivered the commencement address. Adam Smith, a graduating sixth-year pharmacy major, delivered the student address.

Area residents graduate from Northwest State Community College

ARCHBOLD — Area residents have completed their education at Northwest State Community College in Archbold. Commencement ceremonies were held Saturday.

Students include: Kelee Clayton, of Spencerville; Mindy Basil, of Lima; Jamie Greve, Madelyn Black, Andrea List, Jamie Massie and Lindsay Stucke, all of Celina; Whitney Miller and Chelsea Matson, both of Continental; Sarah Osborn and Michelle Roeder, both of Fort Jennings; and Devanne Closson, Arionna Greve, Adam Hoaglin, Ann-Marie Willingham and Amber Zartman, all of Van Wert.
