The term “woke” is being bandied about a lot lately, and several people that I have talked to have no idea what it even means. I know just enough about it to know that I would like to never have to hear of it again, just like I would prefer never to have to deal with political correctness.

Before he became host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC, Johnny Carson hosted a show on ABC called “Who Do You Trust?” The grammatical error aside (WHOM do you trust would have been correct), it’s a question many are asking when it comes to their government, scientists and politicians. Perhaps an updated version might be whom CAN you trust?

It’s at once amazing and troublesome.

This is the third time in U.S. history that the “Black issue” is being handled poorly with a serious need for correction. All three instances were caused by greed, ignorance or “because they could” — no one was watching, little oversight.

Something disturbing was happening inside Occupied France in 1944. The Germans were rounding up France’s entire supply of thorium. And that had the Allies’ big brass scared down to their socks. While America was working on the atomic bomb, it was equally concerned the Nazis might be doing likewise. The fact that they were so suddenly and keenly obsessed with the radioactive element was troubling.

The two men most likely to square off for the presidency of the United States next Election Day have held notably different conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

My father did not have a happy childhood.

I will always fondly remember from my political career two individuals. They were different as night and day. One a Republican president who became my friend and the other a Democrat born in Connecticut who would become my congressional role model — even though I never met him as I was in high school when he left office. Both men served in Congress together and are associated with Black History Month.

I’m for the birds. Unfortunately, they’re not for me.
