Council approves Better Together roofing bids

LIMA — Lima City Council approved several measures to support the city’s Better Together home repair program at its meeting Monday night.

Mayor Sharetta Smith said that she was grateful for the support given by council as they awarded contracts to five companies to perform roof repairs in the community.

“It is a relationship that we formed early on,” she said. “It is a relationship based on our commitment to listen to citizens and work together to improve the quality of life for everyone living in the community.”

The city launched the program in 2022 to offer forgivable loans to homeowners to assist with repairs if eligible.

“I’m excited about it,” Sixth Ward Councilman Derry Glenn said. “It’s going to help our elderly community and that’s what we need to do.”

The program is not accepting new applications until October, but anyone interested can visit the city’s housing and neighborhoods page on its website for more information and look for “housing repair programs”.

Funding for the city’s Better Together program comes from the American Rescue Plan Act.

The city passed all other measures on the agenda, including one to authorize the Civic Center Foundation to utilize the Greater Lima Region Park and Amphitheater for community events, starting with the Solar Smash Bash.

The event, featuring music and entertainment ahead of the April 8 solar eclipse, will open up the spring schedule for the venue Saturday, April 6.

The next council meeting will be April 9.
