Kiwanis Club celebrates family

LIMA — Throughout the year, service clubs give back to community members. The Lima Kiwanis Club gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate and honor those who give. The city of Lima’s Public Information Officer Jessica Begonia, on behalf of Mayor Sharetta Smith made a proclamation naming Nov. 14 Kiwanis Family Day.

“Since its founding in 1915,” Begonia said, “the Lima Kiwanis Club has been an integral part of the community serving the children of Allen County. The Kiwanis family includes members of all ages and abilities. It sponsors several service leadership programs with over 300 members.”

Students across Lima joined the gathering in celebration of the day. The Ohio District Kiwanis Governor Jason Miller and the Division II Lieutenant Governo Dale Hart joined the lunch also.

“Kiwanis is an international organization,” Miller said. “Its vision and mission is committed to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Our biggest service project that we undertake is our service leadership program.”

The programs are not only on a local level but a national level.

“The Lima Kiwanis Club sponsors 13 different service leadership programs are what we like to call SLPs,” Miller said. “Those are opportunities for students to really get involved in community service as well as developing their leadership potential that they might have with that.”

Miller also said the programs include the Builder’s Club at the middle school, K Kids at the elementary school, the Key Club for the high school, Circle K for the university and the Action Club for adults with disabilities.
