Roses and Thorns

A little bit of rain this week unfortunately seemed to help the thorns as much as it helped the roses.

Thorn: To the people who dropped three black kittens along the side of state Route 117, west of Lima, recently. All three kittens were hit by vehicles and died. There are responsible, humane ways to make sure animals you can’t care for are loved. Stop leaving your unwanted animals out in the country to die.

Rose: To the people in Cairo who helped erect a historic marker to recall Aug. 4, 1961, when the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League played the Cairo Merchants of the Lima Metro League. It’s wonderful to remember our history and the significant strides those games played in helping race relations.

Thorn: To former Auglaize County contractor Jeffrey Collingsworth, who will spend 18 months in prison for scamming dozens of customers of J&R Roofing and Remodeling. If you accept the work and the money, just do the work and do it right.

Rose: To Jeffrey Hobbs, the interim superintendent for Delphos schools. We wish him well as he learns all about the district and how to lead it best.

Thorn: To Darrell Bivens, who pleaded guilty to aggravated arson for setting his same-sex domestic partner on fire. Violence is never the answer to domestic disputes.
