Roses and Thorns

The stubbornly dry weather has led to some tough growing conditions for farmers. It hasn’t hurt our rose garden, yet.

Thorn: To negotiators for Mercy Health and the Anthem Medicaid plans. If they don’t reach an agreement by the end of the month, people on these plans won’t be able to get their care from one of Lima’s two medical systems. Figure it out before it hurts the people.

Rose: To Ottawa-Glandorf’s Alexa Fortman, who successfully defended her state championships in the 400- and 800-meter runs. To win one title is an amazing feat for someone. Winning two is astounding. To do it back-to-back years just shows her drive.

Thorn: To Jaquaveius Harvey, who will spend 17 years in prison for selling counterfeit drugs to a confidential informant. His argument that they’re not real drugs and were just flour and ash doesn’t sway us much. He still contributed to the drug culture in Lima.

Rose: To the Ottawa officials and private property owners who are working to renovate two largely unused historic buildings in the Putnam County village’s downtown. We anxiously await their being used at full capacity once again.

Rose: To the Ohio Theatre, which now gets to show off its renovated auditorium. It’s wonderful to have this historic landmark back in the business of entertaining patrons, and we hope the community supports it.
