Roses and Thorns

Thank goodness for successful athletes in the region, or the garden would be overrun with thorns this week.

Thorn: To Paul Curtis, who declined to speak at his sentencing hearing in the murder of Sam McLaurin. While a family member spoke on his behalf, you can give the family of the deceased and your own soul some consolation when you acknowledge your regret. He’ll have to think about that during his 19 years to life in prison for such a heinous and unnecessary crime.

Rose: To Allen East’s Eli Criblez, who kept battling back from disappointing finishes at the state wrestling tournament the last two years before winning the top place in the 285-pound class last week. You have made your fans, coaches and community proud.

Rose: To the boys basketball teams at Crestview and Ottawa-Glandorf. You both represented your communities well on your way to the state tournament in Dayton.

Thorn: To whoever is involved in the string of barn fires in Mercer and Van Wert counties. It’s not just needless destruction of personal property, but it puts firefighters’ lives in danger. Someone knows something and should call the state fire marshal’s tip line at 800-589-2728.

Thorn: To the vandal who spray-painted “KKK” on a van at the NAACP’s headquarters at Grace Church Ministries. You showed nothing but ignorance and cowardice.
