Roses and Thorns

A little bit of frost in the mornings apparently isn’t enough to ward off some nasty thorns.

Rose: To area law enforcement officers, who’ve done a great job of connecting with children through various Halloween events in the region. We’ve witnessed you approaching children who have differing levels of receptivity to you, and you handled it like pros. These efforts will help build the trust a community needs with its law enforcement.

Thorn: To Melvin Boothe, who was convicted of aggravated murder, tampering with evidence, gross abuse of a corpse and possessing criminal tools in the death of McKenzie Butler, whose body was found buried in a Lima park. Her twin brother said it best: “You’re a crazy, sick monster.” He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Rose: To Lima council, for rejecting an effort to eliminate smoking in city parks. We’re with councilor Todd Gordon, who said, “I am very uncomfortable with taking the liberties away from people.” Designating smoking areas to limit second-hand smoke has worked well since Ohio banned indoor smoking, with outdoor patios becoming de facto smoking areas at many restaurants.

Thorn: To Romiere Hale, who will spend at least 18 years in prison for murdering his girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter and abusing her 7-year-old son. It’s a good reminder to be cautious when you’re getting back in the dating scene.
