Roses and Thorns

There are plenty of thorns out there. Then again, you find thorns when you’re looking for thorns. We prefer to seek out the occasional rose.

Thorn: To Patricia Core, who was sentenced to seven days of jail for giving Judge Terri Kohlrieser “a lot of attitude” when she was brought into the courtroom for refusing to be part of a jury. It’s an ongoing problem, with not enough jurors showing up to keep justice going forward. Please, just show up for your jury duty!

Rose: To Virgil Knippen, of Ottoville, whose idea will be used in the nationally syndicated Pluggers cartoon on Friday. In it, the caption says, “If you grandson asks if he will get fat like you when he gets old, you’re a plugger.”

Thorn: To Janicqua Bailey, 23, who will spend five years in prison for her role in a fight at J’s American Pub. She’d originally removed her ankle monitor and disappeared before sentencing. The judge in the case said she “led that mob” that left Bradin Fisher-Jones with extensive facial fractures.

Rose: To dog groomer Jolene Siebeneck, who won the People’s Choice Award and the first-place trophy at the Groom Expo in Hershey, Penn. Her dog, Weller, was a willing participant and earned a steak.

Rose: To the area high school football teams who clinched their league championships this weekend. That’s one honor you’ll carry with you for life, and you should enjoy that accomplishment. We know you’re looking ahead to your playoff runs, but take a deep breath and take pride in what you’ve accomplished.
