Keeping up with the kids

SPENCERVILLE — It’s been a few years since any of the special guests in Spencerville had to worry about getting to homeroom before the bell rang. But a number of seniors were eager to get to their seats on Wednesday to show that you’re never too old to go back to school.

Spencerville Local Schools held the first of three Senior Citizens’ Days in the cafetorium.

Superintendent Cindy Endsley began the program last year, inviting seniors in for a visit to keep them abreast of things that are happening in the school district and for a time to just speak to one another.

It’s a time for seniors to socialize in a place that has been the center of the community and their lives for many years.

The cafeteria staff provided a breakfast that was served by members of the National Honor Society. The Jazz band under the direction of Josh VanGorder played selections that included “Moondance”, popularized by Van Morrison, and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” by Duke Ellington.

Endsley shared with the seniors some of the safety improvements in the district. The most noticeable is installing a fence around the elementary school playground. She then opened the discussion for a question and answer session.

The seniors expressed a concern about transportation. Endsley explained that normally seven drivers are needed to transport students to and from Spencerville schools. Currently they are working with six. Endsley was able to give a first-hand account of bus driver training. She is currently training to be a bus driver. She explained that the written tests sometimes are a hindrance. Too often when people fail the demanding test the first time; then they give up. Endsley has 15 hours of driving to complete before she can be certified to drive a school bus.

A second Senior Citizens Day will be held in December with the final meeting being held in the spring.
