Roses and Thorns

As the temperatures cool, the roses really stand out from the thorns.

Thorn: To all the people held in contempt recently for not showing up for jury duty. It’s a shame the judges have to resort to this, but justice requires a panel of impartial jurors pulled from the population. None of us wants to imagine sitting in jail, waiting for our day in court to clear our name, only to learn the trial has to be pushed back because they can’t find any jurors. If your name is called to go to jury duty, do your civic duty and help. Otherwise, don’t cry to us when you’re waiting for your own jury on your charges.

Rose: To Jeff Bassitt, of Cridersville, whose submission to the nationally syndicated comic Pluggers will appear in Saturday’s The Lima News, with the caption, “You’re a plugger if you still think removing a mattress tag is a criminal offense.”

Rose: To Leipsic graduate Mason Brandt, who may be the first person in the area to take advantage of the new Name Image and Likeness rules for collegiate athletes.

Thorn: To the Allen County Prosecutors Office, which had the wrong date on its case against Jacquavius Cooper for allegedly having sex with another person while knowing he had tested positive for HIV. The indictment was off by a year and a half. Lawyers of all people should know the importance of accuracy, which made it embarrassing when Judge Terri Kohlrieser tossed the case over the discrepancy right as it was about to go to trial. It was such a waste of limited government resources.

Rose: To Total Health Care pharmacy, 825 S. Cable Road, Lima, which recently opened and hopes to bring back the days of a person having a real relationship with health care providers. We’re looking forward to your success and personal touch.

Rose: To the beautiful fall colors, especially those as crimson as a rose. It almost makes you willing to overlook the temperatures dropping by 20 degrees.
