Roses and Thorns

As the traditional summer comes to a close with Labor Day, it’s easy to see both the flowers and the weeds in the garden:

Thorn: To the thief who took telescopes and equipment from the Schoonover Observatory last weekend. If you were really a stars buff and knew anything about the observatory, you would’ve known the people volunteering there would’ve helped you use it there. Now, you’ve incurred unnecessary stress and costs for a group with a shoestring budget.

Rose: To Cenovus, which celebrated the Lima refinery’s 135th anniversary last week while acknowledging the facility is a key component to the company’s plans. It’s comforting for this city, knowing that in the past quarter-century BP had planned to shutter the facility.

Thorn: To Matthew Brown, who will serve 150 years to life in prison. It’s bad enough you caused unimaginable harm to a 14-year-old male victim, but for you to claim you were the victim and feared for your mental health and safety during a sentencing hearing is ludicrous. We can only imagine the mental anguish you’ll have in prison, and still it’s not punishment enough.

Rose: To whoever paid for Roman’s birthday cake at a Walmart in Lima. The purchaser left a note, saying they bought the case in honor of their “bonus grandson,” Caden, who died earlier this year. “He was a kind, loving and generous young man that never met a stranger — young or old! He once said that ‘every child deserves a good birthday,’ so this is from him to you!”
