Roses and Thorns

Election season just has a way of bringing out the weeds, doesn’t it?

Thorn: To the roughly four out of five registered voters who won’t bother to vote in Tuesday’s primary election for state representatives and state central committee members. People get so wrapped up in federal elections that they forget most of the decisions that affect your daily life — how our schools are funded, which roads get fixed and, now thanks to the Dobbs decision, whether abortion is legal or not — are actually made on the state and local levels. Earn yourself a rose and make sure you vote. You can vote in person on Tuesday at your polling location or with early in-person voting 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

Rose: To the late Gloria Jean Lawrence, whose generous donation of $498,000 helped with the improvement of parks throughout the city, including at Faurot Park. She never had children but wanted to provide a legacy for children in her hometown, and she accomplished that.

Thorn: To Michael Pasterchik, who will spend 22 years in prison on two involuntary manslaughter counts for causing the death of two women by furnishing them with heroin and fentanyl. It’s a sad reminder of both the dangers of drugs and the responsibility we all have to protect each other.

Rose: To Don B. Clevenger, of Lima, whose idea was used in Saturday’s national syndicated comic Pluggers. It says, “You’re a plugger if you doin’t know which knife to use to eat your peas.”

Rose: To Teresa Maag, of Leipsic, whose idea will appear in next Saturday’s Pluggers. It’s about how pluggers yell their home blood pressure results down the hall to their spouses.

Rose: To Bev Beery, of Beery Insurance Services LLC, who the National Federation of Independent Businesses selected as a Small Business Champion for Ohio.

Rose: To Emma Burkey and Logan Renner, for winning the Lima YMCA/Kewpee Triathlon and Duathlon at the Ottawa Metro Park.
