LIMA — The people of Allen County just needed some space to get out and enjoy nature.

LIMA — In May 1971, about 450 alumni from 14 states gathered in Lima for the 50th and final anniversary of the first graduating class of St. Rita’s School of Nursing.

LIMA — Lima was a little late recognizing the new Labor Day holiday, but when it did on a Monday in September 131 years ago, the celebration was a doozy.

LIMA — In popular myth, the young Victorian-era lady, cocooned in several layers of clothing and watched over by chaperones, used her hand fan to send out secretive signals to men.

LIMA — On Aug. 24, 1948, the first day of the last Allen County Fair to be held in Delphos, a large crowd had gathered to greet the guest of honor, Ohio Gov. Thomas Herbert.

LIMA — G.E. Bluem was walking the floors of his department store on a busy Saturday in the spring of 1924 when he came across a man tampering with the lock on a rear door of the store on the northeast corner of Market and Elizabeth streets. The man fled but Bluem was cautious.

LIMA — Beginning in early 1916 horsepower began replacing horses at the Lima Fire Department. “If the present plans of Safety Director (Albert) Gale are carried the motorized apparatus from the Central, West and South stations will be installed within the next two weeks,” the Lima Times-Democrat reported Jan. 10, 1916. “No more supplies for the horses will be purchased unless absolutely necessary,” the newspaper added.

LIMA — The spring of 1915 was in sight when Lima’s Morning Star & Republican-Gazette announced the Civic League’s annual flower seed giveaway while doing a fair job of selling the idea of planting a garden.

After enduring war-time wage controls and restrictive labor laws passed in the aftermath of World War II in answer to a rash of work stoppages, workers at many Lima plants were ready for action, never more so than in the mid-1950s.

In the spring of 1942, as Americans adjusted to the everyday reality of living in a country at war, Lima residents could find escape watching “Rio Rita” with Abbott and Costello at the Ohio Theater, or the Dead End Kids in “Mob Town” at the State, or perhaps catch a double bill of monster movies at the Sigma.
