Townsend steps down as Lima Senior head coach

Lima Senior is in search of a new football head coach.

In a statement released by the Lima City School, “Alphonso “Biggie” Townsend has stepped down from the position for personal reasons. We have begun the search for Lima Senior’s next football coach/program coordinator.”

Townsend leaves the program after three seasons where he posted a 7-20 overall mark. This past year, Lima senior went 3-7 and made the postseason before falling in the first round.

The Spartans have not posted a winning record since 2017 and enter the Toledo City League this year with the disbandment of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

A 2000 Lima Senior graduate, Townsend was considered one of the top offensive and defensive linemen in the country.

He was a First Team All-American and ranked No. 3 among offensive linemen in the nation and No. 4 among defensive linemen by Rivals.com. He also earned First Team All-Ohio honors and was listed among the Midwest’s top 20 players (No. 15).

Starting on both the offensive and defensive line, Townsend played at Fork Union Military Academy. He then played at Michigan State University and then attended the University of North Alabama.

Prior to taking over the football program, Townsend had served as a campus protection officer at Lima Senior, while serving as the Spartans’ defensive line coach and as a lacrosse coach. He previously also worked on the basketball and baseball coaching staffs.
