Roundup: Bluffton University’s Grandey gets 300th victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Bluffton University baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take down Alvernia 11-9 for head coach James Grandey’s 300th career victory Tuesday. The Beavers evened up their season mark at 2-2.

Justin Maurer went 3-of-5 with a home run and three RBI for Bluffton. Teammate Jack Towell was 2-of-4 with 2 RBI and a homer.

Bluffton goes 1-1

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Bluffton University rallied for a 5-4 win against St. Vincent before Allegheny pitched a 7-0 shutout in game two, snapping a three-game winning streak for the Beavers. Bluffton stands 4-2 heading into its off day in Florida.

Reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week Erin Norman stayed perfect at 3-0 with her third straight complete-game effort in as many days. She allowed four runs on eight hits with no walks and four punchouts.

Mia McCartney drew three walks and scored three of the five Beaver runs. Bobbi Adams finished with two of Bluffton’s five hits and she drove in three runs. Another key to the Bluffton victory was eight Saint Vincent errors that helped the Beavers score two unearned runs.

Bluffton finished with three hits in game two.

UNOH splits games

CLERMONT — The University of Northwestern Ohio fell 6-2 to Mount Vernon and defeated Judson 5-0.

Against Mount Vernon, Anna Ankney had a home run and two RBI. Winning pitcher Jaylyn Mullenax went five innings, allowing four hits and a walk against Judson. Ankney and teammate Chloe Goulter each homered. Ankney had three RBI and Goulter, who had two hits, knocked in two.

ONU athletes earn all-region recognition

ADA — Keegan Digby, Tessa Pitcovich and Izzy Burman earned a pair of All-Great Lakes Region accolades to lead a list of Ohio Northern student-athletes to earn All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA in men’s women’s indoor track and field for the 2023 season.

David Gross, Trey Myers, Trey Masterson, Jordan Dean, Zach O’Neill and Claire Schweller also earned All-Region honors.

To earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be one of the top five individuals in their respective event in their region on the final TFRRS Descending Order List. In addition, each member of a region’s top three relay teams was also selected for distinction.
