Roundup: Gearing scores 20 in Shawnee girls basketball victory

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Trinity Gearing had 20 points and 12 rebounds as Shawnee opened its girls high school basketball season Saturday night with a 70-39 victory against Fort Jennings.

Tessa Jordan had 12 points and Tessa Stahler scored 11 also for the host Indians. Fort Jennings’ scorers were not reported.

VANLUE — Graesan Evans had eight points and Mackenzie Grener scored seven for USV.

MIDDLE POINT — Kerri Prowant had 13 points and Addyson Army and Catelyn Etter scored 10 each for Continental. Kendall Bollenbocher had 16 points for Lincolnview.

KENTON — Lindsey Smith (20), Kaylin Hildreth (13), Hannah Holland (10) and Makenzie Bays (10) each scored in double digits for Kenton. Rosie Williams had 21 points and Olivia Stolly scored 17 for Lima Central Catholic.

LEWISTOWN — Jaelyn Schultz had 10 points and Jordan Elliott scored seven for W-G.

McDonald’s Holiday Tournament

BLUFFTON — Arlington defeated Cory-Rawson 54-28 in the championship game. Bluffton topped Allen East 63-33 in the consolation encounter.

Samantha Roth had eight points and Mackenzie Cascaden scored seven for C-R.

Laykin Garmatter (20), Libby Schaadt (12) and Kylie Monday (10) each scored in double digits for Bluffton. T Newland had 25 points for Allen East.

Arlington’s Lindsay Dodds was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Kylie Sheets and Hailey Essinger, Roth, C-R’s Zoe Chisholm, Garmatter and Newland.

COLUMBUS — Celina qualified 11th overall, defeating Coldwater 3-0 before falling 3-0 to Struthers. Brianna Henning had the high series (514) and Ashtyn Huber had the high game (202) for Celina.

LIMA — The University of Northwestern Ohio (20-1) advanced in the NAIA Tournament. Kate Agyemang and Olga Massombo each had a goal and Jeweleen Reuille had an assist. Lisa Venrath made a save to earn the shutout in goal. UNOH finished with seven shots on goal.

LIMA — The Racers advanced in the NAIA Tournament. Walid Zniber had the match’s only goal off a Diego Flores assist. Mark McMillan made a safe to earn the shutout in goal.

BLUFFTON — Bath grad Andrew Renner (24), Jameel Cosby (13), Isaiah Taylor (12) and Aaron Rich (10) all scored in double digits for the host Beavers (2-2). Teammate Dezman Brown contributed eight rebounds.

Toledo 100, UNOH 41

TOLEDO — Dylan Alderson scored a career-high 30 points, among six UT players who reached double figures as Toledo (4-2) easily beat UNOH (2-7).

Nathan Lessing had 16 points for the Racers. Justin Koepp added seven points and seven rebounds.

ANN ARBOR — Lima Senior graduate Xavier Simpson had 22 points, 14 assists, five rebounds and a pair of steals for Michigan (4-0) in its 111-68 victory Friday night against Houston Baptist.

OBERLIN — Brianna Gillig (25), Tj Mills (19), Kylie Brock (18) and Nora Hemminger (13) each scored in double digits as the Beavers moved to 3-0 on the season. Hemminger also had nine rebounds.

LIMA — Fort Recovery grad Tori Lennartz had 28 points, New Knoxville grad Erin Scott had 13 points and nine rebounds, Kimyra McGhee had 11 points and seven rebounds and Tya Bell contributed eight points and 15 rebounds for UNOH (1-7).

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Bath grad Jaidyn Hale (17), Marion Local grad Emily Mescher (14) and Wapakoneta grad Lexi Jacobs (12) scored in double digits for ONU (3-0) at the Wisconsin Lutheran Tournament.. Teammate Kate Iliff had seven rebounds.

77th at nationals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Ohio Northern’s Tessa Pitcovich finished 77th out of 280 runners at the NCAA Division III Championships at Tom Sawyer State Park.

Pitcovich ran a 22:40 in very muddy and sloppy conditions to post the fourth-best NCAA Championships finish in school history.

3-1 at Duals

OLIVET, Mich. — Ohio Northern wrestling team went 3-1 at the Olivet Duals at the Cutler Center.

The Polar Bears (6-3 overall) ended the day with a 22-16 victory against No. 12 Alma (Michigan)

ONU began the day by defeating Henry Ford (Michigan) 42-4 and Saint Claire CC 41-11 before falling to Olivet 28-13.

Seth Transue (133 pounds) and Cash Thompson (197) each went 4-0 on the day to lead Ohio Northern.
