Letter: August Issue 1: Taking power from citizens

Coming this August is an election of great importance. Historically, citizens tend to ignore August elections. For the sake of democracy, this an election people should not ignore.

Issue 1 is on the ballot. If issue 1 passes with a simple majority vote it will make it more difficult, in fact almost impossible, for citizens to amend the Ohio Constitution in the future. This is a right that Ohioans have had for more than 100 years.

What happens if Issue 1 passes? First, it becomes far more difficult to put future issues initiated by citizens on the ballot. If an issue is on the ballot, passage becomes far more difficult. Rather than a simple majority, the new threshold becomes a super majority of 60%.

Here is what it boils down to. Issue 1, if it passes, takes power away from Ohio’s citizens and makes career politicians even stronger. If you don’t want that to happen, show up and vote no.
