Letter: American Legion year in review

The American Legion, William Paul Gallagher, Post 96 has been a member of the Lima area community since October 1918. The following is a “year in review” report of our activities for 2015.

Our facilities at 711 South Shore Drive hosted 15 funeral dinners for the families of deceased veterans; a children’s Christmas party for 225 kids; a Christmas dinner for non-member adults. The members of the Post prepared and served lunch for over 350 on Veterans Day at the Allen County fair.

Our club officers assisted 25 veterans with claims at the Veterans Administration.

We provide cash support to the following local charities: The Allen County Veterans Food Pantry, Lima Rescue Home, Elida Band Boosters, The Arc of Allen County, Lima Firefighters Memorial Museum, St. Rose School and Lima City Schools Jr. High athletics. We would have liked to provide what help we could to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital but could not make contact with any local representative.

We also, again this year, hosted the annual Veteran’s Day service on November 11 and …oh yes; we do have a canteen which provides an opportunity for members to gather for camaraderie where ideas about what we can do in the community are often discussed. The 910 members of Post 96 along with the members of Sons of the American Legion Sqdn 96 and the American Legion Auxiliary Chapter 96 are looking forward to another year as members of the Lima / Allen County community.
