Letter: Elida’s ‘Sound of Music’ adds many laughs

Having seen numerous productions of “The Sound of Music,” I cannot believe how enjoyable Elida High School made its rendition of this theatrical staple.

Instead of being stoic, rigid and focused on landing their mark and hitting their notes, this version is full of laughs with a cast that is giddy and playful and seems to be having an absolute blast on stage while delivering their lines and playing off of each other.

Numerous attendees at intermission and after said the same thing; they never remember a cast of this show delivering it with so much humor. From lines delivered with dry wit to physical humor to hilarious banter, I’ve never heard an audience laugh so hard at this show.

And as they say on TV, “but that’s not all!” Not only did each scene come with great and spirited acting, but the voices delivering the well-known songs were unbelievable. The applause after the songs was thunderous and rightfully so. Again, the songs were done beautifully, but at many points, with more fun and youthful vigor than I have seen in the past, even from the nuns!

The entire production, from the backdrops to the set design to the way set pieces were moved, warrants a review of their own. Kudos to all involved!

The show runs at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Elida High School Auditorium. If you get the chance to see it, you will not be sorry. It is the best telling of the well-known tale that I have ever seen, “bar nun”!
