Committee formed to find next Bluffton University president

BLUFFTON — The Bluffton University board of trustees selected a search committee to find the university’s next president. The committee will vet potential candidates and will recommend qualified individuals for the board’s consideration.

Current President James Harder plans to retire June 30, 2018, after 12 years as president, he announced in June.

“In appointing the search committee, we are using an almost identical committee structure as was used in 2005. This includes representation from trustees, faculty, staff, a student, alumni, select church conferences, the Bluffton community and Mennonite Education Agency,” said Kent Yoder, chairman of the board of trustees, in a press release.

The committee will have 14 people including Yoder as ex-officio. Cheryl Hacker, vice chair of the board, will chair the search committee. Committee members includes:

Trustee members — Larry Milan, trustee and chair of the student life committee, from Bloomfield, Conn.; Ernie Thomas, trustee and chair of the fiscal affairs committee, from Richfield; Greg Wannemacher, trustee and chair of the enrollment management committee, from Lima.

Faculty and staff members — Dr. Perry Bush, professor of history, from Bluffton; James Grandey, head baseball coach and associate athletic director for development, from Bluffton; Dr. Gayle Trollinger, chair of the education department and professor of education, from Findlay.

Student representative — Katey Ebaugh, current student and former student senate president, from Lancaster, Pa.

Alumni representative — Luke Shipp, president of the Bluffton University Alumni Association, from Haskins.

Bluffton Community representative — Laura Voth, CEO of Mennonite Home Communities, from Bluffton.

Mennonite Church USA conference representatives — Kerry Strayer, Central District Conference, trustee and chair of the academic affairs committee, from Columbus; Arnita Yoder, Ohio Conference, from Delphos.

Mennonite Education Agency appointment — Tom Stuckey, member of the Mennonite Education Agency board, from West Unity; Robin Bowlus, senior director of advancement operations and public relations at Bluffton, will serve as special assistant to the search committee.

The trustees will affirm the appointment of Bluffton University’s 10th president. The trustees have partnered with TBC Search Consulting from Columbus to assist the committee.
