Plaque honors former Elida band director

ELIDA — A plaque honoring a former Elida school band director is now hanging next to the band room at Elida High School.

The plaque honors Charles Eugene Wollenhaupt, who served as band director from 1956 to 1987. Also known as “Mr. Gene,” Wollenhaupt designed the “Script Elida” formation and was responsible for the creation of the Elida Alumni Band, according to the plaque.

Along with leading the school band, Wollenhaupt was also an accomplished accordion player, playing as a backup for vocalist Bobby Vinton.
