Public Works plans to remove trees at Schoonover Observatory to improve view for eclipse

LIMA — The city of Lima is clearing the way at the Schoonover Observatory. The Public Works Department plans to remove 23 trees from the grounds and plant 43 new ones. The tree removal is in addition to the new things that are happening at the organization. Public Works Director Kirk Neimeyer weighed in on the project.

“We received a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to improve the Schoonover Observatory,” Neimeyer said. “The $250,000 will go to building improvements, the dome, interior and exterior or the building.”

In preparation for the solar eclipse in 2024, the society will remove the trees for better night viewings.

“The Astronomical Society has identified an issue with trees that have grown to full height,” Neimeyer said. “We need to remove those trees and plant trees that do not grow as tall — It will give us better usage of the observatory.”

The Lima Astronomical Society has night viewings every Friday evening at 8 p.m.
