Lima sex offender gets 3 years prison for another sex crime

LIMA — A convicted sex offender who committed another sex crime while on probation was sentenced to three years in prison at a hearing Thursday.

Douglas Shurelds, 50, of Lima, was sentenced to three years of community control in 2018 for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor — a third-degree felony. He was convicted of two counts of the same offense and for failure to register as a sex offender in Hamilton County on June 16, 2020 — a violation of the terms of his community control.

Shurelds is a Tier I sex offender, following his 2018 conviction for having sex with a child older than 13 but younger than 16. He is required to register as a sex offender for 15 years from the start of the classification.

Megan McLean, the man’s public defender, said Shurelds completed a 12-month sex offender program while serving his three-year prison term in Hamilton County.

Shurelds said he learned a lot in the program, including self control, how to regulate his emotions and what his triggers are.

Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Terri Kohlrieser said that while then-Judge David Cheney found Shurelds showed genuine remorse in the 2018 case, she does not believe the same because he had sex with another teen girl about a year and a half later.

Shurelds will receive 126 days of jailtime credit. After serving his sentence, he will spend five years on post-release control.
