LIMA — Cleveland-based artist M. Carmen Lane will be at the Farmer Family Gallery to open her show Migrations at a gallery reception from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, October 27.
The reception is free and open to the public.
Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., October 27-December 8. The gallery is closed November 23-24.
M. Carmen Lane (African-American, Mohawk, Tuscarora, b.1975) is a Cleveland-based artist, writer and facilitator. Lane is the founder and director of ATNSC: Center for Healing and Creative Leadership, a socially engaged, artist-led, urban retreat, residency, research and exhibition space in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. Lane’s work has been exhibited at SPACES Gallery, EFA Project Space, Riffe Gallery and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Lane has been awarded residencies at Northwestern University, Karamu House and Everglades National Park. Lane’s family has lived in the Great Lakes Region in Ohio for approximately 200 years.
In a statement, the artist said, “We move. We shift and have contact with the land. It speaks to us and we make meaning–creating rituals rooted in our responses to the environments we find ourselves in. Binaries construct unrecognizable narratives and we meet at false edges of difference. Red/Blue. White/Black. Urban/Rural. Other/In. The land knows otherwise. This body of work explores through personal histories one’s understanding of home and its relationship to the cycles of birth, life, death and the systemic interruptions that can molest our understanding(s) of place.”
