Jordan: GOP must ‘stop the madness’ in DC

WAPAKONETA — When asked what the Republican strategy for the 2022 and 2024 elections should be, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, was quick to respond.

“The campaign message in 2022 is, ‘stop the madness,’” he said during a question and answer session with the Wapakoneta Service Club at Anthony’s Fresh Local Eats. “Don’t let it get any worse because [the Democrats] are on a path which is crazy. The message in 2024 is ‘make America great again.’”

Jordan elaborated on what he described as “madness” under the current administration and Congress, touching on the situation at the southern border, on inflation concerns and on rising energy costs.

“What it’s doing to working-class and middle-class families is so serious and it’s a huge concern,” he said, speaking about high gas prices. “I think it’s all driven by, frankly, a lack of leadership in the White House on that issue and so many others.”

Jordan also touched on the war in Ukraine as well as the Tuesday school shooting in Uvalde, Texas in which 21 people were killed, 19 of them children.

“My heart goes out to that community and to the families who lost loved ones,” he said. “It’s terrible. It’s tragic. We need to look at maybe security guards and some other things that we can begin to look at, but what concerns me, though, is that the left always jumps to wanting to attack the 2nd Amendment. We need to understand that this was an evil person who did a terrible thing and that’s who’s responsible.”

Jordan expressed optimism that the Republican Party will make gains after November’s midterm elections, but given that President Biden is still in the White House, he noted that advancing a Republican legislative agenda could prove difficult, even if Republicans win back both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“Biden’s going to veto all the good stuff we need to do,” he said. “But you make the argument and pass it through the House and you see what happens in the Senate and you force Biden to make a decision. That’s just the way our system works, but you hopefully stop the craziness from getting any worse and then you help frame off the 2024 election, which I think is going to be President Trump running for office.”
