Woman flees, arrested, after Van Wert County crash

VAN WERT — A two-vehicle crash in Van Wert County on Sunday left two people injured and another in jail.

According to Van Wert County Sheriff Thomas M. Riggenbach, the accident occurred at approximately 6:44 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Convoy and Richey roads. Based on evidence at the scene, Riggenbach said it appears a vehicle driven by Sherry Ramsey of Van Wert was southbound on Richey Road and failed to stop at a stop sign. Ramsey’s vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Matthew Oechsle of Van Wert, who was traveling eastbound on Richey Road.

The Chevy Trailblazer driven by Ramsey left the scene of the crash. Ramsey and the vehicle were subsequently located in the village of Scott, on the Van Wert-Paulding County Line.

Oechsle was treated and released at the scene for suspected minor injuries. A passenger in his vehicle, Mackenzie R. Ray of Van Wert, sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to Lutheran Hospital by helicopter. Ramsey suffered no apparent injuries.

Riggenbach said Ramsey was taken into custody by deputies for a probation violation charge. She is being held at the Van Wert County jail until a court hearing is scheduled.

The crash remains under investigation and additional charges could be filed. Drugs are suspected to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff said.

Assisting at the scene were Convoy Fire and EMS, Van Wert Fire and EMS, Lutheran Air and Hague Towing.
