LIMA — A sentencing hearing for a former Lima basketball standout charged with a felony count of tampering with records will not be held Thursday as scheduled.
Greg Simpson, a former basketball star at Lima Senior and a two-time winner of Ohio’s Mr. Basketball award, pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to the third-degree charge as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. A second tampering charge was dismissed as part of that agreement.
An Allen County grand jury in December returned two counts of tampering against the 46-year-old Simpson. The charges allege that between October 2018 and July 2019 Simpson, “with the purpose to defraud,” did tamper with “the writing, data, computer software or record … of a local, state or federal government entity.”
Sentencing was postponed at the request of Simpson’s attorney, William Kluge, who last Friday filed a motion seeking the continuance “due to the number of individuals who want to testify” on Simpson’s behalf. Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Terri Kohlrieser agreed to continue the hearing to a date unknown “due to the coronavirus” that has gripped the nation.
