One-time Lima hoops star faces felony charges

LIMA — Former Lima Senior and Ohio State basketball standout Greg Simpson faces charges of tampering with records and will be arraigned on those charges sometime in the near future.

Court documents show the Allen County grand jury earlier this month returned two counts of tampering with records against Simpson. The third-degree felony counts allege that between October 2018 and July of this year Simpson, “with the purpose to defraud,” tampered with “the writing, data, computer software or record … of a local, state or federal government entity.”

Simpson, 46, was arrested late Thursday and was released on an own-recognizance bond. He did not appear during Friday arraignment hearings for others who were indicted during the most recent grand jury session.

Simpson’s most recent arrest is not his only brush with the law over the years.

The two-time Mr. Basketball in Ohio was kicked off the basketball teams at both West Virginia and Ohio State for run-ins with the law. A hit-and-run accident got him excused from the team in the Mountaineer State, and gun charges dogged him at OSU.

Simpson was arrested Nov. 26, 2007, in Logan County for drug trafficking, driving under suspension, speeding and failing to notify an officer he was carrying a concealed weapon. The charges came after he was stopped by a Logan County sheriff’s deputy on U.S. 33 near Bellefontaine. During the stop, an officer saw a loaded gun inside Simpson’s car. Drugs and digital scales were later found in his car by a drug-sniffing dog.

The drug charges and weapon charges were dismissed. Simpson pleaded guilty that November to speeding and driving under suspension. He was fined just over $260 on both charges.

In 1997 he was in the news for failing to pay $8,939 in child support.

Simpson served time in jail for domestic abuse after an incident at Cedar Point in September 1996. Prior to going to jail, he skipped sentencing hearings three times.
