LIMA — Even as his possible involvement in a child-beating case was believed to be presented to an Allen County grand jury just down the hall, a Delphos man on Monday waived his constitutional right to a speedy trial in an unrelated incident.
Anthony J. Denoyer, 18, appeared before Allen County Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey Reed and waived his speedy trial rights to charges contained in an arraignment handed down by the grand jury in August, including counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property, felonies of the fourth and fifth degree, respectively.
Reed alluded to other charges under possible consideration during this week’s grand jury session that are “potentially a lot more serious” and said attorneys involved with the case have expressed a desire to wait until the conclusion of the grand jury to determine future hearings involving Denoyer.
Denoyer appeared in Lima Municipal Court last month and pleaded not guilty to a charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, for allegedly inflicting life-threatening injuries on his infant child earlier this year.
His case was bound over to Allen County Common Pleas Court. He is being held in the Allen County Jail on $300,000 bond.
Delphos police say Denoyer admitted he caused the life-threatening injuries suffered by his 2-month-old child in October. According to a press release issued by Delphos Police Chief Mark Slate, his department was contacted Oct. 29 by officials at Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center requesting that detectives respond to the emergency room at the hospital in reference to an injured child.
Upon their arrival at the hospital, detectives learned the child was being transported via LifeFlight helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus with what were considered life-threatening injuries.
According to the police chief, detectives spoke with the child’s mother and grandparents at the hospital and learned the injuries likely happened while the child was in the care of his father, Denoyer.
