Real Wheels: Retired farmers enjoy collecting vehicles

ADA — Delbert and JoAnn Henry, of Ada, brought their 1966 Ford Econoline Pickup to the Lima Auto Mall Charity Car Show.

The couple purchased the car in Kissimmee, Florida, at a car auction in January 2017 and tailored it home in the spring.

“This is rare. You don’s see many of them. I have been looking for a few years,” Delbert Henry said.

Ford introduced the Econoline model in 1961. It was unlike any other Ford truck. The flat-nosed truck was based on Ford’s compact Falcon line and was a light-duty work truck that featured unibody construction and an engine that was located between and behind the seats of a “mini cab-over” design. The truck was shorter, lighter and supposedly easier to maneuver. It was also less expensive than a conventional pickup. Ford discontinued the model after the 1967 model year.

“We are retired farmers. We never had any (classic cars) until we quit farming. Took the money from selling machinery and bought cars and trucks,” JoAnn Henry said. “We built onto our barn four years ago, so we had a place to store our vehicles. We have 13 other cars.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” said Delbert Henry.
