Accident at Lima’s Whemco foundry sends 4 to hospital

LIMA — Four people were hurt in an accident Friday morning at a Lima foundry.

Shawnee Township Fire Department responded to an industrial accident at approximately 9:36 a.m. Friday at WHEMCO Ohio Foundry, 1600 McClain Road. The Lima Fire Department was called in for mutual aid.

According to Platoon Chief Matt Briggs, three people were transported to area hospitals with burns.

“People were burned. We don’t know what caused it,” said Briggs.

Shaun Berry, 37, of Delphos, Austin Kable, 22, of Lima, and Matthew Hinds, 32, of Wapakoneta, were first transported to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s and then to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. According to Michelle Bednarski, house supervisor at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, all three are in stable condition.

A fourth person was transported — also to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s and then to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center — but this person’s name has not been released. It was unclear Friday what agency transported this person to the local hospital. Bednarski said this fourth patient is in stable condition, like the other three.

The accident remains under investigation.

Company officials could not be reached for comment.
